You wander for days, searching for what cannot be found. You see a man standing there, ravaged by pain—screaming about death. You try to comfort him, but he keeps insisting that they are all dead. You explain that what he sees is nothing more than his own pain and grief. He responds that the ground is well-tended.
You know this man—the Lonely Red Hawk Soldier. His own brother tends to his grave.
“I could never let go, you see—trapped here in this broken world, manipulated by her. The queen who rules over all, who controls all. She forces me to see what I see every night. I cannot rest, even during the day. I long to be released from this wretched world. He betrayed us, slaughtered us—all for his own gain. Why would he love me, only to let me die, to be tortured?”
You explain what you know. You speak of Trix, the child; of the Federation; of the two brothers; of The Poet. You tell him that this is all a prison—the Shattering—and of those who came together to seal away the worlds.
He laughs, and you hear her voice through his. “Child, I know of this. I know all of this. I know whom you seek, but his mind is as shattered as the world around you. He will not help you. No one will help you. I am the queen. He is the king. The bishop will move, and you will be removed from the board.”
